College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University's 2013/14 Book of the Year author Jim Dodge will read selections from his novel Fup twice in November.
Fup, originally published in 1983, is a work of fiction that tells the story of Jake Santee, his grandson "Tiny," and Fup, their adopted mallard living on a farm in the hills of western Sonoma County. We also learn about the back-story that brings Jake, a gambler who travels the West, and Tiny, a young man who loves building fences on a farm with no livestock, together with Fup, an eccentric duck with a fondness for drinking moonshine. the Los Angeles times described Fup as a "contemporary California fable of transcendent charm, wisdom, and beauty." The book was re-released in 2011 in a new, updated edition and can be found in both the HSU and CR bookstores.

Advanced Oral Interpretation Class (COMM 480), Spring 2013
"The students of Humboldt State University’s Advanced Oral Interpretation class proudly present “Outliers on Stage!” The performance will be an oral interpretation/reader’s theater of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: the Story of Success. The show begins at 7 pm on Friday April 26, 2013 and Saturday April 27, 2013 in the studio theater located on the second floor of the theater arts building on the HSU campus. “Outliers” is an examination of what truly makes people successful and
how they differ from the rest of us. The show is entirely student run and free for the whole community. Doors will open 6:45 and seating is limited!
There will be an open dress rehearsal on April 25 that is open to the public. Come by and watch the cast practice this unique, reader’s theater version of Outliers. The following two nights, Friday the 26 th and Saturday the 27th will be official performances.
This creative interpretation of Outliers was scripted and will be performed by the students of the Advanced Oral Interpretation, Comm 480. Come down and support HSU’s communication department and the HSU/CR Book of the Year program."
