Dengler, Lori
On April 7, 2013, a 20 foot fiberglass fishing boat beached just south of Crescent City. Beneath the attached load of gooseneck barnacles, registration stickers from Iwate Prefecture, Japan and had written characters spelling out Takata High School were found. Humboldt Geology Professor Lori Dengler, after some sleuthing and the assistance of Facebook, was able to make a connection with staff at the Rikuzentakata high school who identified the boat as one lost in the tsunami. The boat was returned to Japan in October and Professor Dengler attended its arrival in Rikuzentakata. This talk chronicles the tsunami connections between Northern California and Japan and the story of the little boat that is the largest debris to be returned and a symbol of hope to a city still devastated by the March 2011 tsunami.
