Farb, Benson
Benson Farb is a Professor in the University of Chicago's Department of Mathematics.
In this talk, Benson Farb explains a remarkable circle of ideas: from spaces of configurations of points in the plane to the unsolvability of the quintic to Hilbert's 13th problem to complexity theory to braid groups, and more.

The Little Things that Run the Savanna: How ecological interactions create spatial patterning and why it matters.
Doak, Daniel
Many natural ecological communities show striking spatial patterning at large and small scales, but the importance of such patterns for ecological processes has received relatively little attention. Dr. Doak will discuss research conducted in central Kenya in which he seeks to understand how spatial patterning arises and when and why it exerts important influences on multiple aspects of this ecological system. As this research shows, the inconspicuous activities of termites in the system are a key driver of many aspects of savanna ecology.

Gerritsen, Margot
Large scale production of very heavy oil is gaining momentum.Unfortunately, production of such reservoirs typically leads to large environmental impacts. One promising technique the may mitigate these impacts in in-situ combustion (ISC).
