Theognis and the Sources for the History of Archaic Megara

Our knowledge of the historical events that occurred during the late seventh and sixth centuries,1 the events simultaneous with the evolution of the Theognidean corpus, is based on relatively few sources, mostly literary in nature. My purpose is to survey our extant sources, investigate what materials, including the Theognidean poems themselves, may ultimately lie behind these late passages, and comment where appropriate on the trustworthiness of our information on archaic Megara.
