  • The practicality and cost-effectiveness of cleaning and rehabilitating oiled wildlife following petroleum spills has been controversial. A number of variables can potentially affect individual survival of oiled birds following rehabilitation including weather conditions, type of petroleum product spilled, efficiency of response and rehabilitation efforts, physiological status of birds (including stress levels), and affected species. With recent improvements in oiled bird care, there has been an increased need to evaluate the success of post-rehabilitation and post-release survival as well as behavior of oiled seabirds. We investigated survival, movement patterns, and foraging behavior of surf scoters that were captured, rehabilitated, and released following a bunker fuel oil spill on San Francisco Bay, California in November 2007.
