  • Castaic Lake is a large water storage reservoir located in northwestern Los Angeles County. It is the terminal and most southern reservoir on the west branch of the California State Water Project, which is administered by the California Department of Water Resources. Large numbers of Western Gulls (Larus occidentalis) have been identified on Castaic Lake (Young et al. 2003). Consequently, if Western Gulls impact water quality, we expected water quality to be poorest when the gull population at Castaic Lake was highest, coinciding with the timing and number of gulls present on the lake as well as the sources where gulls forage. Ocean and breeding conditions vary from one year to the next. Although the seasonal fluctuation in numbers of Western Gulls (Young et al. 2003) was consistent with timing of breeding on the coast (Ewald et al. 1980, Spear 1988), it was unclear whether this pattern persisted from year to year or was an anomaly of a single year. Thus we conducted further observations of Western Gull abundance from fall 2004 through summer 2005. We also sought to understand how gulls were using Castaic Lake and mechanisms responsible for the observed variation in numbers.
